The 80-year-old Japanese adventurer Yuichiro Miura intends to scale Mount Everest for the third time, and if successful, he will set the record for the oldest person to reach the summit.
Miura successfully summited Everest in 2003 and 2008 at the ages of 70 and 75, respectively. The current record for the oldest Everest summiteer is held by Nepali climber Min Bahadur Sherchan, who reached the top in 2008 at the age of 76. If Miura succeeds, he will break that record.
Miura suffered serious injuries in a skiing accident in 2009 and experienced a recurrence of arrhythmia last autumn, undergoing two heart surgeries. After the surgeries, he completed weight-bearing endurance rehabilitation training. Miura and a nine-member climbing team are preparing to ascend via the standard South Col route on Everest. The team includes a cardiologist who will monitor Miura’s health. They aim to reach the summit in May.
“If your desire is strong, and you have courage and endurance, you will reach the peak of your dreams,” said Miura.
