On Saturday, a group of nine novice hikers from two vehicles went on a self-drive leisure trek (Lailishui in Fangshan — Coffin Mountain — Great Cliff).
Coffin Mountain — as the name suggests — has an unusual shape, resembling a giant coffin lying horizontally among the peaks when viewed from afar. The separated massive rock on the left is vividly interesting, looking like a huge tombstone. The local villagers, playing on the similar sound of "Coffin Mountain," interpret it as a symbol of career advancement and wealth. Also, from a certain angle at the mountain’s base, its appearance resembles an ancient official’s hat, hence it is also called Official Hat Mountain, symbolizing promotion and prosperity. The famous late Ming Dynasty literatus Yuan Hongdao wrote a poem as evidence: “To witness the profound emotions of life and death, ascend the solitary hermitage atop Coffin Peak,” which helped the mountain rise to fame beyond debates about its auspiciousness.
The Great Cliff----- Located to the right rear of Coffin Mountain, the summit stands at an elevation of 1,000 meters, with cliffs thousands of feet high and seemingly bottomless, creating an indescribable sense of awe. When youreach the summit of the Great Cliff, every bit of hardship feels worthwhile. Standing atop the towering cliffs, you enjoy breathtaking mountain scenery all to yourself.
