Kinmen’s Latest Installation Art “Spirits Wall on Panshan” Aims to Spark Intergenerational Dialogue

The Kinmen Island Village Development Association has moved away from the traditional approach of painting entire villages, instead combining local industry (sorghum) with local culture (wind-lion gods) to create a brand-new “spirits wall” in the Panshan community. This is not just an installation art piece; it also aims to use the wind-lion god as a village guardian against evil and to breathe new life into the settlement.

The name of this Panshan spirits wall originates from the phrase “Kinmen’s liquor is strong, Panshan’s wall is spirited,” hence the name. The concept took roughly two months to develop.Over 2,500 liquor bottles were stacked, with just one row of bottles taking more than an hour to arrange, and the entire wall took nearly a week to complete. The front of the wall features imagery of Kinmen and a cute version of the wind-lion god, while the back uses bottle mouths so visitors can hang wish cards to convey positive energy.

The Kinmen Island Village Development Association stated that last year they tried painting over the dirty ditches in the Panshan community and held a picnic event, mainly to encourage people to break free from conventional definitions of space. This year, once again in Panshan Village, they hope to spark greater public participation in community affairs and intergenerational dialogue through connecting more nodes.
