Beihang Lingfeng Society, as the top-ranked among the top ten student societies at Beihang University, has a history of over a decade since its establishment and is known as a "thousand-member society." The society is dedicated to organizing a series of outdoor activities such as rock climbing, mountaineering, and scientific expeditions. With its well-developed management system and unparalleled vitality, it has earned recognition and widespread praise both on and off campus. Since 2005, forming a mountaineering team each year has become a major focus of the society’s activities. This year, the 13th mountaineering team completed the first leg of their hiking journey during the recent Labor Day holiday—Mount Wutai in Shanxi.

As soon as the Labor Day holiday began, unlike many college students who stayed in their dorms, the Beihang Lingfeng Mountaineering Team spent two full days hiking through the East, North, Middle, West, and South Terraces of Mount Wutai. They covered nearly 60 kilometers on foot, with a total ascent of about 4,200 meters and a total descent of about 4,600 meters, successfully completing the "Five Terraces" traverse with an estimated difficulty level of 4.0.
Mount Wutai, located in the northeastern part of Shanxi Province, consists of five major peaks: East, West, South, North, and Middle. The highest peak—the North Terrace—stands at 3,061 meters above sea level and is known as the "Roof of North China." The annual average temperature is below 0°C. On this trip, all team members carried heavy loads, with tents, sleeping bags, food, water, and other supplies packed into individual backpacks. Regardless of gender, after packing up neatly, the average weight of each of the twenty large backpacks exceeded 15 kilograms. Small bodies, big packs—already from the organized packing, we could see the team's rigor and attention to detail. The difficulty and potential dangers of the traverse route went without saying.

On April 27, after an all-night journey, the team arrived at the foot of the East Terrace before 6 a.m. At an altitude of over 2,400 meters, a sudden chill welcomed their arrival. However, it was reported that the first day’s mission was heavy and tough—they needed to summit four terraces: Northeast, Central, and West, in sequence. The team leader, Chen, said, "This expedition serves as a training session before our real mountain climbing. It’s not extremely difficult but very intense. We hope every teammate can persevere to the end. High-intensity training is the foundation of everything. We don’t want any team member to fall behind in areas that can still be controlled."
Although the first day’s journey was grueling and exhausting, the team members overcame both physical and mental pressure and summited the East and North Terraces in sequence. On the way from the North to the South Terrace, one member accidentally got injured due to fatigue and carelessness. Upholding the principle of "no one left behind," some members escorted the injured teammate down while others pressed on toward the Middle Terrace. The smile of the injured member—who kept encouraging everyone despite his own injury—strengthened the resolve of every member to keep going, all hoping to fulfill his dream of completing the Five Terraces traverse. The team regrouped at the Middle Terrace, hastily had dinner at a temple, and by nightfall, the cold had intensified. Considering the next day’s plan, the team leader decided on a nighttime assault on the West Terrace. Though utterly exhausted, everyone resolutely followed the leader’s command. The team formed a line, using headlamps to light the path ahead. That night demonstrated the unyielding spirit and remarkable courage of the Lingfeng members. After one or two hours under the cold night sky, with the help of the temple master at the West Terrace who shone a flashlight for us without fear of the bitter cold, we finally reached the West Terrace and stayed overnight at the temple.

Prayer at the West Terrace

The next morning at 9 a.m., the team bid farewell to the West Terrace and set off toward the most distant and challenging South Terrace. After crossing countless ridges—and even with one member having to descend due to a leg condition—their desire to reach the South Terrace never wavered. Around 6:30 p.m., the team successfully arrived at the final destination: the South Terrace. Sitting on the low wall at the terrace top, with a slightly chilly mountain breeze brushing their faces, the initial smiles returned to their faces. "Quick, let’s take a commemorative photo!" everyone called out.

When the sunlight on the mountaintop shone upon their faces, it felt like a reward, like affirmation, like a gift—rewarding them for their sweat and exhaustion along the way, affirming their journey and perseverance. It gifted these souls yearning for freedom and untamed spirits a true sense of belonging and rest within nature’s vast embrace.
"Lingfeng, go for it; Mountain Team, go for it!" Their resounding declarations echoed through the skies, as if all worldly ties no longer concerned them. They belonged only to themselves, to their dreams, and to this highly cohesive team.
In fact, every expedition of the Beihang Lingfeng Mountaineering Team follows very strict discipline. Everyone must assemble quickly and punctually, take good care of equipment, no one may leave the group without the leader’s permission, all decisions must be unconditionally followed, and individualism is strictly prohibited… Any violation of discipline results in corresponding punishment. Not only that, they also have a well-established division of responsibilities where everyone participates and contributes their part to the team.
Let’s send them our best wishes. May they stand atop the peaks of Tibet three months later and once again flash their brightest smiles to us and to the world.
    Lingfeng—climbing the heights of life.
