At 0:00 on May 8, Ding Tao, known as the "Cycling King" who had previously completed the Sichuan-Tibet route ten times, embarked on a challenge to ride the route in just eight days. Setting off from Tianfu Square, he cycled continuously for over 20 hours and braved snow to climb the 4,300-meter-high Zheduo Mountain, leaving many fellow cyclists both worried and impressed. “The Sichuan-Tibet route in May this year was much colder than it usually is even in September,” Ding Tao told reporters. The biggest challenge of this ride was the weather, and Ding Tao also experienced ongoing stomach discomfort shortly after starting. Due to poor weather conditions, supplies couldn't keep up, and Ding Tao had to rely on the dry food he brought. “That made my stomach pain worse, and by the end I could barely stay upright on the bike.” With no other choice, after reaching Palong Village in the Nyingchi region on May 15—having cycled over 1,500 kilometers—he decided to give up. The next day, he went to Bayi Town for medical treatment before flying back to Chengdu.
This was the first time Ding Tao had to abandon the Sichuan-Tibet cycling route midway in his 11 attempts. His previous fastest record was 8 days, 12 hours, and 55 minutes. “No regrets—it’s health that comes first.” As for whether he will attempt the route again this year, Ding Tao said, “It’s still uncertain.”
