The 60-kilometer ultra marathon concluded on the 29th at Namche Bazaar, the gateway to Everest’s southern slope, with Nepalese soldier Tamang winning the championship in a time of 7 hours, 56 minutes, and 31 seconds.
The second and third places were taken by two other Nepalese soldiers, with times of 8 hours, 13 minutes, 40 seconds and 8 hours, 21 minutes, 36 seconds, respectively.
Compared to the annual Tenzing-Hillary Marathon, which has been held since 2003, the ultra marathon is a new event. Its distance has been extended from the standard 42.195 kilometers to 60 kilometers, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the first human ascent of Everest.
According to the organizing committee, the ultra marathon attracted a total of 17 participants, including 5 Nepalese and 12 from countries and regions such as New Zealand, South Africa, the United States, Germany, and Australia. Among the 17 runners, 2 were women.
The starting point of the 60-kilometer marathon is the same as that of the Tenzing-Hillary Marathon, both set at Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5,364 meters, with the finish line also located in Namche Bazaar.
