Cat lovers, prepare to melt—3 must-visit cat spots in hidden alleys of Tainan

Tainan isn’t just home to historic architecture and century-old delicacies that are incredibly enticing. Cat enthusiasts can also find immense joy here. ETtoday EBC News specially compiled three popular cat-themed attractions in Tainan, ensuring cat lovers can snap photos non-stop. Just as northern Taiwan has Houtong, Tainan boasts cat spots that are just as charming. Don’t wait—start your pilgrimage now!

“Tainan Cat Village”—Taiwan Alkali Dormitories
Address: Luer Li, Annan District, Tainan City (opposite Luermen Mazu Temple)

Dubbed Tainan’s cat village, the Taiwan Alkali Dormitories were built in 1940. Officially known as the former Taiwan Alkali Anshun Plant Japanese-style dormitory area under Sinopec, several red-brick and wooden structures stand here, slightly dilapidated due to years of neglect and weathering. Yet, set against the backdrop of nearby Lianli mangroves and reeds, it has also become a hidden gem for photographers shooting wedding photos.

Many cats reside here, coexisting peacefully with the few remaining residents. Perhaps due to long-term human interaction, the cats aren’t very shy around people, making this a famous cat colony comparable to Houtong in the north. Visitors who have been here suggest visiting early in the morning or after sunset in summer, as the cats tend to avoid the heat and are more active during those times. Also, because residents still live nearby, be mindful not to disturb them while interacting with the cats.

Yintong Community “Cat Highlands”
Address: Lane 3, Kaishan Road, West Central District, Tainan City

The Yintong Li painted alleyways, created through the joint efforts of volunteers and local residents, are beautified using recycled waste materials. PET bottles, bottle caps, empty cans, discarded film rolls, water pipes, and more have all been transformed into decorative items. Further along, you’ll find a rainbow tree on the wall and colorful little houses—popular photo spots for visitors. Continuing on, you’ll pass landmarks such as Qingshui Temple, Luk Ji Baozi, and over 70-year-old earthen-wall old houses, eventually reaching Cat Highlands.

“Cat Highlands,” surrounded by old houses, was originally just an abandoned plot of land. It earned its name because cats frequently visited and the area is slightly elevated compared to its surroundings. Cat lovers will definitely want to snap photo after photo here. The colorful, fairytale-like painted walls, happy black, white, tabby, and orange cats playing around—even the floor features beloved cat paw prints. Additionally, there are cat figurines in flower beds and on walls. Black cats climbing, sitting, or standing in cute poses bring smiles to every cat lover’s face.

Qigu Salt Mountain Park “Giant Maneki-neko”
Address: No. 66, Yancheng Li, Qigu District, Tainan City

Qigu Salt Mountain is a popular local tourist attraction, where salt is piled up into mesmerizing formations that look different from various angles. In addition to the scenic salt fields loved by photographers, the park also features a massive 6-meter-tall “Maneki-neko” (lucky cat). Its enlarged face and paws are so adorable that cat lovers can’t help but fall for it. No matter your size, standing next to it makes you feel tiny, adding to its charm as another highlight of Qigu Salt Mountain. If you love cats, how could you miss this spot?
