The country’s longest single-span scenic suspension bridge, measuring 281 meters, is set to be completed this year. The thrill of walking 1,000 meters above sea level has both excited and thrilled travelers across Taiwan. “Taiping Skywalk” is located in Taiping Village, Meishan Township, serving as the gateway for visitors entering the northwest corridor of Alishan National Scenic Area. It also acts as a vital transportation route for the North Tea Culture Tourism Zone. Once completed, it will connect areas such as Taiping, Longan, and Bihu, allowing visitors to enjoy a relaxing mountain excursion filled with scenic views, tea tasting, and coffee.

A firsthand visit reveals that the 281-meter-long bridge spans between two mountaintops, offering breathtaking views of the entire Jianan Plain and even the Taiwan Strait. Watching the sunlight filter through the clouds and mist, you can take in the beauty of sunsets and the shimmering glow of the sky. It’s reported that three sightseeing trails will be developed around the Taiping Skywalk in the future: a short trail connecting the bridge to the visitor center, which takes about 25 minutes to walk; a roughly one-hour trail ascending from the bridge to W???; and a three-hour ridge trail, providing hiking enthusiasts the chance to reach the Yunjia Five Peaks and admire the spectacular scenery.

After enjoying the views from the skywalk, head to Taiping Old Street for some food and drinks. Taiping Village’s old street boasts a history of over 100 years, featuring a 30-year-old beef noodle shop, a handmade bamboo craft workshop, a conscientious vegetable store, and a traditional old-style convenience store — all exuding a strong sense of local charm and the simple allure of an old street. Chiayi’s Meishan Township is also one of Taiwan’s earliest-developed high-mountain tea regions, with tea plantations densely covering villages such as Taiping, Longan, Bihu, and Taixing. Visitors can pick a teahouse to sit down and enjoy a peaceful cup of tea.

At the end of the old street alley, you’ll find a Filial Piety Pavilion hidden deep within a bamboo forest. Locals say the name “Filial Piety Road” originated from times when transportation was underdeveloped — if a villager fell ill, it was up to able-bodied people to carry them down the mountain for medical help. If the elderly survived, the carrier was honored as a filial son; if not, they became another kind of “filial son,” hence the name. The lush bamboo forest features a stone stairway trail. Walk through the verdant Maoshan bamboo grove and soak in the serene beauty of nature.
