Section 2: The World’s No.1 Pine “Nine-Dragon Pine”
After four hours of driving, the convoy arrived at the World’s No.1 Pine “Nine-Dragon Pine” at 11:20 AM. The Nine-Dragon Pine is locatedin Fengning County, about 15 kilometers northwest of the county seat, inWudao Ying Township. According to expert research, this tree was planted during theNorthern Song Dynasty, has survived through six dynasties, and is over 980 years old. The Nine-Dragon Pine stands 9.1 meters tall, with a circumference of 2.8 meters, and its longest branch extends up to 13 meters. Visually, it has nine thick branches that twist and intertwine. The branch tips resemble dragon heads, the trunk curves like a dragon’s body, and the bark is blocky, resembling dragon scales. Each of the nine branches looks like a dragon soaring upward, which is why locals call it the Nine-Dragon Pine. So why is it also known as the World’s Most Unique Pine? Because it possesses several rare features that are truly one-of-a-kind in the world.

Section 3: Buddha Bead Cave
---- The Buddha Bead Cave is located 28 kilometers northwest of Fengning Manchu Autonomous County in Hebei Province. It’s an easy stop along the journey to the North’s No.1 Grassland — just step off the main road to visit. The cave features a slender 500-meter-long ravine as its central axis, covered by 18 massive rocks that resemble Buddhist beads, forming a uniquely staggered row of caves, hence the name Buddha Bead Cave.
----Legend has it that there was once a highly accomplished lama monk who practiced for many years at Yu Zhu Temple. He often leaped across peaks on a single log. One day, when Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty was patrolling the northern frontier and passed by, he was astonished by the sight and remarked, “How perilous — if he fell into the valley, wouldn’t he die?” No sooner had the words left his mouth than the lama fell from a great height and died instantly, yet his body showed no wounds and bore a serene, kind expression. His attendants hurriedly reported to the emperor: “This lama had achieved enlightenment and completed his cultivation, and it was only by your majesty’s words that he ascended to the Pure Land.” Regretful, Emperor Kangxi immediately ordered local officials to build a stupa to enshrine the lama’s body, and summoned skilled artisans to carve the image of the lama — with lotus petals beneath his feet and a Buddha’s halo behind him — into the cliff face halfway up the mountain, to be worshipped as a deity. It is said that after the lama passed away, the string of 18 bodhi seeds he held in his hand transformed into 18 giant Buddha beads that remain on earth, continuing their mission to deliver all beings. Looking closely at Lama Mountain from below, it indeed resembles a benevolent Buddha statue, with this string of beads hanging right on the Buddha’s left arm.Upon approaching the cave entrance, you’re greeted by a cheerful stone Buddha inscribed with bright red characters reading “Amitabha.” Inside the cave, sunlight dims instantly, and a cool breeze greets you. A small group of visitors can venture forward with flashlights, smiling despite the darkness. This cave is unlike typical natural rock caves — it is formed by countless massive rocks stacked atop one another. Some large chambers can hold hundreds of people, while smaller ones barely fit one. The heights vary from over a hundred meters to just half a foot. The rocks lean against and connect with one another, seemingly joined yet not quite, almost falling but never quite doing so — often scaring visitors, yet ultimately proving safe.
Stepping into the unique underground corridor of the Buddha Bead Cave, you can walk along plank paths, step into rock hollows, climb suspended ladders, listen to the tinkling of stream water underfoot, enjoy the thrill of an underground maze, explore the wonders of a perilous realm, and savor the joy of surviving near-death experiences.
Exiting the triangular cave opening, turn southward along the western side of the main peak, then descend an 80-degree steep cliff for 20 meters via chains to enter the Moon Pearl Hall. The Moon Pearl Hall is named after the nearby Moon Pearl Temple. Standing inside the hall and looking south, you’ll see Cloud Mist Mountain and Goat Hoof Mountain below, along with the resplendent and majestic Dajue Chan Temple — currently under construction and set to become the largest jade Buddha city in northern China.
The Bowl Park, located at the summit of the Buddha Bead Cave, is known as a one-of-a-kind “world geological wonder.” Glacial potholes are remnants of glacial activity and serve as strong evidence of ancient glaciers. Experts note that glacial potholes have been found in places like China’s Huangshan and Lushan mountains, Tibet, Germany, and Poland — typically located on glacial beds within glacial valleys. However, the cluster of glacial potholes on Lama Mountain in Fengning is found atop hard granite ridges, 100–300 meters above the ground, forming at least 35 potholes in two distinct northern and southern groups.
