Do you sleep, daydream, or stare at your smartphone while commuting? Seoul’s subway has recently gotten a little more interesting—with a game design featuring “I·SEOUL·U” on the floor of train cars on Line 6. This interactive game encourages passengers to engage with others around them, offering an alternative to being glued to your device and making the subway car feel a little less cold and impersonal.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government stated that the “I·SEOUL·U” ladder game is a public-friendly event planned after the launch of the city’s brand last year. Ladder patterns with instructions have been placed on the floors of train cars on Seoul Metro Line 6. Passengers follow the path of the ladder according to their seating and pair up with passengers in corresponding seats on the opposite side to complete tasks such as making eye contact, smiling, and giving high-fives—all following the game's prompts. This allows passengers of all ages, nationalities, and backgrounds to enjoy a fun and unique ride.

The “I·SEOUL·U” ladder game is a collaborative activity created by both organizers and citizens. The Seoul Metropolitan Government explained that Line 6 passes through popular tourist spots among foreign visitors such as University Road and Itaewon, and it has a suitable passenger volume for promoting the event, which is why Line 6 was chosen for the game design. The hope is that this activity will allow people to experience the joy of communicating and connecting with others. Although the “I·SEOUL·U” ladder game will only run until October 20th, more public-friendly events are planned in the future to make Seoul a friendlier city.
