Last Sunday, eight hikers climbed the main peak of Qingshuijian in Mentougou District when they discovered human remains. It is understood that the remains were found near the area where a Taiwanese elderly man went missing in April 2013, leading rescuers to speculate that they could be his. Yesterday afternoon, Mentougou police stated that based on color, the remains do not belong to the missing Taiwanese elderly man.

According to the hiker who discovered the remains, last Sunday he and seven friends went hiking on the main peak of Qingshuijian in Mentougou District. When they reached an altitude of 1,500 meters, they found the main trail splitting into left and right paths. Unfamiliar with the route, the group decided to take the left path. After walking a short distance, they realized it was a dead end. On their way back, they spotted what appeared to be human remains by the side of the trail.

The hiker said they found fragments resembling a skull as well as a long bone, but there were no clothes nearby. He then brought some of the bones down the mountain and handed them over to the police.

The previous evening, the Beijing Haotian Rescue Team also received the news. Since on April 4, 2013, a Taiwanese man surnamed Dong had gone to this mountainous area alone and went missing near Qingshuijian and has not been found since, the rescue team did not rule out the possibility that the remains could be his. At 10 a.m. yesterday, members of the Beijing Haotian Rescue Team and the hikers who found the remains cooperated with police to search for the remains in the mountains.

According to the hikers’ description, the remains were likely found near an electricity tower on the western side of the main peak of Qingshuijian. Based on his understanding of the site, the location is only about a 20-minute walk away from the last known spot where the footprints of the missing Taiwanese man Mr. Dong were found.

At 6 p.m. yesterday, the group that went up the mountain to search for the remains came back down. The remains, packed in three bags, were taken away by the police for further investigation.

Yesterday afternoon, a reporter from the Beijing Times contacted the Mentougou police, who stated that the remains were indeed human bones, but the bones were dark in color, suggesting they had been there for many years, and did not belong to the missing Mr. Dong. The police are currently carrying out further investigations and bone analysis. (Reporters Meng Fanzhe & Wang Cheng)
