Can you imagine a pregnant woman having to walk for 9 days through -35°C extreme cold just to reach the nearest hospital to give birth? This happened in the Ladakh region of northern India. After giving birth, the mother had to make the same 9-day journey back. The family had to brave -35°C temperatures, walking eight hours each day while carrying their baby and essential supplies, then sleeping in caves at night and lighting fires to keep warm. In fact, the journey from the Ladakh region to the hospital in Lingshed takes five days in summer, but takes longer in winter because heavy snow blocks the roads — frozen river surfaces become the only passable routes.
