In January 2014, among the 5,982 star-rated hotel enterprises that entered the "China Hotel Industry Monitoring System Platform" of Meadin.com, a total of 21 executives were appointed. The number of appointments decreased by 2 compared to the same period last year.

  (1) Analysis by Appointment Distribution Region

According to statistics from Meadin Tourism Research Institute, this month, personnel changes were relatively frequent in Shanghai, Guangdong, Beijing, and Hainan, with each of these four regions appointing 3 executives, accounting for 14% of the total appointments. Following closely was Zhejiang, with 2 executive appointments, making up 10% of the total. In addition, there were also executive appointments in Liaoning, Jiangsu, Hong Kong, Hubei, and other regions.

Additionally, there were 3 regional group executive appointments this month: one at the global level, one for Greater China, and one for East China.

  (2) Analysis by Appointment Position

Looking at the positions involved in the appointments, this month saw active hiring for general manager roles, with a total of 12 appointments, accounting for 57% of all star-rated hotel appointments. This was followed by food and beverage director positions, with 3 appointments, making up 14% of the total. Unlike previous months, the appointment of marketing and sales directors was less active, with only 2 appointments. Beyond the above, there were also appointments for executive chef, CEO, operations director, and executive vice president positions. Overall, the variety of positions appointed in January was not extensive.

Among the many general managers appointed in January, we can see the presence of female general managers. One is Ms. Anne Scott, who was appointed as the General Manager of The St. Regis Sanya Yalong Bay Resort, and the other is Ms. Peng Zhuangsheng, who was appointed as the General Manager of Beijing Marriott Hotel. At present, while most general manager positions in high-end hotels are still held by men, we are also seeing more and more women gradually stepping into senior management, showcasing their talents and leadership in the workplace.

  (3) Analysis by Appointment Brand

According to statistics from Meadin Tourism Research Institute, this month Starwood appointed a total of 5 executives, accounting for 24% of all star-rated hotel appointments, making it the most active brand in terms of appointments. In January, Shangri-La, Hilton, and Marriott also each appointed 2 executives, making up 10% of the total. There were also executive appointments in other brands this month, such as InterContinental, Kempinski, Hyatt, Fairmont Raffles, and Pan Pacific.

Among the brand appointments, it is noteworthy that in January, Pan Pacific Hotels Group welcomed a new CEO, Mr. Schneider. Prior to this, he served as the CEO of Jin Jiang International Hotels Management Company.

In addition to the more familiar brand appointments mentioned above, in January, the GCH Hotel Group also announced two executive appointments. One is an Executive Vice President responsible for the development and operations of GCH in the Greater China region. Additionally, the General Manager of The G Charlton Sanya Yazhou Resort was appointed. The resort is expected to officially begin trial operations in April 2014. It is reported that the GCH Hotel Group was founded in Malaysia and owns two major brands: G Charlton and Lyana.

China’s leading hotel headhunting brand—Qiaobutang—analyzed that in January 2014, major hotels were busy preparing for the Spring Festival, and due to factors such as year-end bonuses, the willingness of most hotel employees to change jobs in January decreased. However, actual talent mobility was inevitable. According to a survey report by Meadin Tourism Research Institute, in 2013, nearly 60% of the surveyed hotel professionals indicated that their hotels had fewer overall staff compared to the beginning of the year. As a result, many hotels had already begun a new round of recruitment activities in January to build up their talent reserves. But based on past trends in personnel changes, talent mobility is not very active in January and February, and recruitment by hotels often faces challenges. However, after the Spring Festival, it is believed that recruitment and job-seeking activities will gradually heat up.
