According to the UK's Daily Mail on March 21, two brave British travelers, Adrian Butterworth and Gunnar Garfors, visited five continents in one day, breaking a Guinness World Record.
Adrian Butterworth and Gunnar Garfors are university classmates. The two of them visited Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, and South America in one day, creating new history. As they were prohibited from using private jets, their only mode of transportation was commercial flights, and they were allowed to use only £1,100 as travel funds, with no other sponsorship. They spent two years planning this trip, starting from Istanbul, Turkey, and ending in Caracas, Venezuela. The challenge officially began at 1:10 a.m. on June 8, 2012, and lasted until 10:05 p.m. the same day, with a total duration of 28 hours and 25 minutes. However, due to the different time zones of the continents, they landed on all five continents within the same calendar day, so the record is valid.
Butterworth is a documentary filmmaker from Bournemouth, UK, and Garfors is a Norwegian journalist. They documented the journey with cameras and video equipment. Butterworth said, "A few years ago, I saw news about someone walking across the bridge over the Bosphorus Strait in Turkey and achieving a crossing between Europe and Asia. That was too easy and also boring, so I decided to do something crazy." Garfors added, "Achieving this record has checked off another item on my bucket list. I’m really passionate about crossing continents, and there may be new goals in the future, but for now, let’s celebrate with a Guinness beer first."
