Recently, the 2014 "Challenge 8 Hours" Charity Hiking Event, jointly organized by the China Youth Development Foundation and co-hosted by the Beijing Mentougou District Sports Bureau and Zhaitang Town People's Government, was officially launched.
This year’s event will take place on June 21, 2014, in the picturesque Zhaitang Town of Mentougou District in Beijing. At that time, individuals, families, enterprises, and NGO groups from all over the country will gather here to challenge themselves and hike for love, using the power of walking to help rural children grow up healthy and happy.
Zhaitang Town, surrounded by high mountains and narrow valleys, crisscrossed by gullies, connects to the capital city in the east and reaches the desert in the west. Historically, it has been a strategic military location and is known as the "Important Town of Western Beijing." The town is also hailed as the "Green Shield of Beijing," with the famous Shuanglong Gorge and Lingshan Scenic Area. Ancient villages are scattered among green hills and fields, offering views of blue water and skies, a cool and pleasant climate, and breathtaking beauty especially in June. It is also a revolutionary base area where countless anti-Japanese heroes once wrote moving epics of resistance, boasting a glorious history of revolutionary struggle.
The "Challenge 8 Hours" Charity Hiking Event is a public welfare fundraising walking activity implemented by the China Youth Development Foundation. Having successfully held two editions, this third edition continues to combine outdoor hiking with the spirit of philanthropy. It encourages the public to challenge their physical limits while raising funds for charitable projects, using perseverance and determination to inspire others to support and participate in public welfare.
It is reported that the funds raised in this event will be used to build "Project Hope Happy Sports Playgrounds" in rural primary schools in remote areas, helping these schools improve their sports facilities. A donation of 20,000 yuan can equip a rural primary school with a full set of national-standard sports equipment, supporting the school in carrying out on-campus sports activities.
The 2014 "Challenge 8 Hours" Charity Hiking Event includes three routes: a 30-kilometer Challenge, a 20-kilometer Experience, and a 10-kilometer Family Walk. The hiking routes are more thoughtfully designed and people-friendly. The 10-kilometer Red Journey and the 20-kilometer Reservoir Scenic Route mostly feature flat terrain, while the 30-kilometer eco-friendly route alternates between mountain trails, paved roads, and dirt paths, with complex conditions and altitudes ranging from a high of 1,188 meters to a low of 420 meters, making it quite challenging. Participants can choose a suitable course based on their physical ability and enjoy different hiking experiences.
This event accepts individual registrations, teams of four, and family teams. Enterprises and social organizations can also form teams to participate. Each participant is required to raise a minimum amount of donations upon registration: 500 yuan per person for the 10-kilometer route, 600 yuan per person for the 20-kilometer route, and 800 yuan per person for the 30-kilometer route, with more donations being encouraged. The organizer, the China Youth Development Foundation, has set two key milestones to encourage participants to fundraise and rally more support for the event: those who donate over 100 yuan before June 1 will qualify to participate; after the event on June 21, participants will have an additional month to continue raising funds. If a participant fails to meet the minimum fundraising requirement within the stipulated time, they may be disqualified from future "Challenge 8 Hours" events. Participants in a team of four who raise over 30,000 yuan (inclusive), or individuals who raise over 10,000 yuan (inclusive), will automatically qualify for the next event and can invite one additional team of four or one individual to join. These participants and their invitees are exempt from fundraising (they only need to pay a 100-yuan participation fee each).
For this event, the China Youth Development Foundation welcomes more social organizations to form teams and establish platforms to raise funds for their own charitable causes. Additionally, volunteer teams will be recruited from university clubs and non-profit organizations to provide services at various event stations.

Challenge for love, hike for good causes. Let rural children show joyful smiles.
