It was a popular restaurant in the Zhongyonghe district community groups recently. Opened at the end of July, I visited in August but unfortunately encountered the shop's sudden decision to close for the day. Luckily, Shanghai Restaurant was right next door and solved the problem just in time. A few days later, not giving up, I came back again—this time with fellow bikers.

Today’s Specials

The fish cutlet was given as part of a check-in promotion and the portion was huge, while the tofu was a special treat exclusive to motorcycle riders. The flavors were decent. The main curry dishes come with pumpkin soup, which was a bit bland. The pork cutlet ordered separately wasn’t very big, the meat was average, and some parts were slightly dry. The honey mustard sauce was the highlight—I liked its sweet and mildly spicy taste.

The owner was very friendly. After hearing that I love curry, she gave me an extra green sauce to try along with the signature and red sauces. The signature curry had a mild level of spice, and subtly carried a hint of cinnamon flavor. Out of curiosity, I asked the owner and indeed, it contained cinnamon as well as other spices such as cloves. The red sauce was tangy and spicy, while the green sauce had a stronger kick of heat. For me, both had a bit of an issue where the coconut milk overpowered the other flavors, but they were appetizing and easy to eat. Coupled with free rice refills, I ended up feeling bad and got another bowl of plain rice.

Shanzhijia offers sauces that make you want to expect even more. For Zhongyonghe, that’s already quite impressive. The head chef, who is the owner’s son, is young and has worked at Grand Hyatt. Hopefully in time he’ll be able to further bring out the potential of these sauces.
