At 1:00 PM on May 11, 2014, the Beihang University Mountaineering Team, along with several other university mountaineering teams from Peking University, Tsinghua University, and more, attended a public welfare mountaineering technique training session at Peking University’s climbing wall. The training was provided by Peak Outdoor Sports School, and the content...
The first part of the training focused on the use of roped team techniques required for climbing snowy peaks. The instructors gave a detailed explanation of team roping by comparing its safety and climbing efficiency with solo climbing. They emphasized three key principles of team roping: 1. The rope distance between two people should be as short as possible while still ensuring a safe length to cross crevasses. 2. The two people should stay close enough that the rope is nearly touching the ground. 3. When crossing a crevasse, the rope should be kept perpendicular to the direction of the crevasse’s extension. After the first part of the training, all university mountaineering teams immediately took out their gear to conduct simulation exercises, while the instructors walked around attentively providing guidance.
The second part focused on route-setting techniques, including detailed demonstrations of snow anchor placement methods—horizontal placement, vertical insertion, and the “cross” method. It also covered some good mountaineering habits, such as how to hang equipment.
Throughout the entire training session, instructors explained each segment in detail, using either personal experiences or examples, and added humor to their teaching. Every member of the mountaineering team listened attentively and took turns putting on the gear to practice. As a result, everyone made significant progress in their mountaineering skills.
