On May 31, 2014, the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival is set to kick off its national tour in Beijing at the TianDi Theatre.
Known as the “Oscar of the Outdoors,” the Banff Mountain Film Festival officially entered China in 2010, bringing to Chinese audiences the world’s newest and most outstanding outdoor-themed documentaries and the lifestyles they depict. Now in its fifth year in China, the festival has not only become a beacon for outdoor culture, promoting the development of China’s outdoor industry, but also sparked deep reflection on life and living among countless people.
The 2014 Banff Mountain Film Festival China Tour will be held from May to August in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Chengdu. In addition to screening the latest films, a series of events have been ongoing since April to celebrate the festival’s fifth anniversary in China. These include a Banff China 5th Anniversary Retrospective and Carnival, environmental film screenings, wilderness first aid and survival training, a themed travel tour to the Canadian Banff Mountain Film Festival, climbing instruction workshops, adventure filmmaking training, and talks and sharing sessions by domestic and international explorers and filmmakers.
In 2013, to support Chinese outdoor documentarians, Banff China and its founding organization, Yingtao Sihua Culture Communication, established the “China Outdoor Documentary Unit,” which received an enthusiastic and successful response from both documentary makers and audiences. In 2014, this initiative was renamed the “China Outdoor Film Project.” Submissions opened in March 2014, with selected films to be screened alongside the Banff Mountain Film Festival China Tour from May to August. Award-winning works will be honored in August and nominated for the Banff Mountain Film Festival. Ms. Qian Haiying, China Regional Director of the Banff Mountain Film Festival, stated: “We believe that through our efforts and those of many outdoor documentarians, and with the support of Chinese audiences and industry partners, we will soon see Chinese faces on the award stage of the Banff Mountain Film Festival.”
