Exploring the Hidden Lotus: A Journey into Medog
——2014Beihang Lingfeng Scientific Expedition Team’s Departure to Medog
Introduction:2014Year7Month20Day,2014the Beihang Lingfeng Scientific Expedition Team officially set off for Medog, Tibet, to conduct a20-day research expedition.
Main Text: The Beihang14Lingfeng Scientific Expedition Team was established at the start of the semester and had a total of twenty members. This year’s research theme is “The Hidden Lotus Emerges from the Deep Valley.” The team set out today and arrived in Medog, known as the “Sacred Land of the Lotus” and the “Hidden Lotus,” located in Nyingchi, Tibet. Their goal is to study the impact of the opening of the Zhamo Highway on the local community. Over the course of half a month, the team will use field investigation methods, including government interviews, resident visits, on-site surveys, and literature research, to examine the economic, cultural, and lifestyle changes in the local community before and after the highway opened, and ultimately complete a corresponding scientific research report.
After six months of physical training, and through the collaborative efforts of the research group, publicity group, and sponsorship group, along with experience gained from multiple expeditions to Yunmeng, Huangcaoliang, and Little West Lake, task clarification during summary meetings, and personal growth through two ‘criticism sessions’ of self and peer evaluation, the expedition team has truly undergone a transformation and has finally embarked on this glorious journey.
With longing for the natural scenery, fascination with the local culture, and anticipation of the highway’s impact, the team members’ hearts drew closer to their dreamed-of destination with every mile the train covered. How has the highway changed the once isolated and primitive community? Has the connection between the hidden paradise and modern society improved the residents’ impoverished lives? Will the sacred land of the lotus and China’s most beautiful trekking route—titles that stir such high expectations—disappoint because of the highway? Will Medog become a commercialized small town, just another Fenghuang Ancient City? The expedition team will answer these questions one by one after entering Medog. Let us look forward and explore together with them.
