On October 15, 2014, the "Challenge the Outdoors, Exceed Your Dreams" 2014 Pingxiang Wugongshan First National College Students' Mountain Outdoor Challenge was held to a successful close in the Wugongshan Scenic Area of Pingxiang. Nearly 200 college students from 32 teams, including Peking University, Beijing Normal University, China University of Geosciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanxi Agricultural University, Sichuan Normal University, National Taiwan University, and National Tsing Hua University, took part in the challenge. After two days of intense competition, the Zunyi Medical University team won the championship with a time of 6:57:24.5, the MobiGarden China University of Geosciences (Beijing) team claimed second place with 7:06:48.7, and the Shenyang Sport University team secured third place with 7:26:42.2.

In an effort to establish Wugongshan as a "world-renowned outdoor tourism destination," the scenic area has seized the opportunities presented by the opening of the Shanghai-Kunming High-Speed Railway's Pingxiang Station and the Beijing-Guangzhou High-Speed Railway's Zhuzhou Station. It has accelerated its push to become a national 5A-level tourist attraction. Centered around building "two bases"—the China Outdoor Sports Base with the Golden Summit Scenic Area at its core, and the Health and Leisure Resort Base centered on the Yangshimu Scenic Area—the area is speeding up infrastructure development, focusing on "three service zones" (the New Mountain Gate Service Zone, the Golden Summit Cableway Service Zone, and the Golden Summit Meadow Tourist Zone). It aims to create an industrial development layout consisting of "two towns (Wanlongshan Hot Spring Town and Xigu Outdoor Town), one belt (the leisure and sightseeing agriculture belt along the Lu-Wan-Wu tourist highway), one center (the Tourist Distribution Center), and one zone (the Yangshimu Health and Elderly Care Resort Zone)." The focus is on developing three types of slow-travel leisure and vacation products: outdoor experience tours, health and wellness retreats, and rural leisure tours, striving to make it a preferred vacation spot for residents of the four major urban agglomerations: Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan, the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and the Greater Wuhan area.
