Suburban ski resorts are key venues for winter fitness and leisure activities among the general public. The broadcast and influence of the Sochi Winter Olympics have greatly stimulated enthusiasm for skiing among the youth and families in China’s northern ski hubs—especially in the capital—and have begun to foster a new trend of group outings with friends. In response to the shifting demands of the capital’s sports and leisure market, Nanshan Ski Resort in Beijing made significant investments this summer to renovate and expand its existing facilities, aiming to provide a better experience and service for both new and returning skiers.
1. A new four-person chairlift has been built along the central slope, replacing the previous double chairlift. This new lift still features two intermediate stations, which will double the transport capacity to the front-mountain Merrill Park, intermediate moguls runs, as well as the back-mountain advanced runs and wave runs, thereby alleviating weekend lift line congestion for mid- to high-level skiers.

7. Changes in ski ticket prices directly affect the affordability and willingness of thousands of winter sports enthusiasts in the capital to engage in fitness and leisure activities. The outdoor suburban ski resorts in Beijing have reached a consensus: they do not support or endorse the irrational and unlawful decision to drastically raise water prices by seventyfold and pass on the costs excessively to the general skiing public. This season’s ski ticket prices have been adjusted only moderately—by around 10%—in response to rising labor costs.
