Where did the boss go, abandoning the shop? Boss~ Boss~ If you don’t come out soon, I’ll just take and run~ Oh well, today we’re at Grandpa Han’s place in Fenglin, Hualien. Grandpa Han sells twisted dough sticks, but he’s often not around. The twisted dough sticks in the kitchen, the “Liang Xiang Hao” (well, some folks up north call them twins!), the tea eggs in the rice cooker, and the steamed buns in the steamer—they’re all just sitting there. Want some? Help yourself!

It’s all self-service, and you pay based on your conscience. Before buying, check the price list. How much you take, that’s how much you put in—it’s up to your honesty as a customer. Highly recommend the crispy sweet twisted dough sticks (the ones coated in white sugar syrup—don’t accidentally grab the savory ones with sesame!) and the Liang Xiang Hao, which are super chewy but get more addictive the more you eat!

According to the sign, the honest twisted dough stick business has been running since 1976 (Republic of China year 65). Maybe it’s the simple, sincere vibe of Fenglin that keeps this kind of business going!

The table cabinet holds the twisted dough sticks and Liang Xiang Hao, with a water dish under the metal legs to keep ants and other bugs away.

Check the prices first—the snacks, including the twisted dough sticks, are all very affordable. A full meal here might only cost you around NT$100.

The tea eggs are still warm—eating them in the sweltering summer heat? That’s a bit extreme!

The twisted dough sticks and Shandong-style steamed buns are all DIY—perfect for carb-loading. If I ride my bike through here again, I’ll definitely stop by to eat some more.

This Liang Xiang Hao is deep-fried to have an incredibly chewy texture, even giving my usually strong teeth a bit of a challenge. The sweet dough is fried to release a lovely aroma—it’s delicious (chomp chomp)!
