On November 15th, the "Red Bull Cold Rush" Shenyang stop heated up at Vanke City Hunhe Tiandi. Following the spectacular cosplay snowboarding performances at the Beijing stop's "Creative Kicker Big Air Contest," the Shenyang snowboarders also caught everyone’s eye with their fashionable and trendy looks, featuring over a dozen instantly recognizable characters from classic films, games, and anime such as Emperor Kangxi, Mickey Mouse, Darth Vader, Naruto, mummies, and Super Mario. They brought a boiling energy to the winter night with temperatures at zero degrees. Local Shenyang rider Qian Cheng dressed up as Garra from Naruto, giving this recently concluded classic anime a snowy sequel. With 164 votes, he won the championship and took home a 3,000-yuan prize.
After an intense, cool, and thrilling competition, and hundreds of audience tag votes, the champions, runners-up, and third-place winners of the Shenyang stop's Red Bull Cold Rush "Creative Kicker Big Air Contest" were revealed. Among them, “Naruto” took the top spot with outstanding snowboarding skills and a stylish, cool look. “Emperor Kangxi” and “Mummy” secured second and third places respectively with impressive looks and skiing styles. Additionally, the rider dressed as a “bee” won the “Best Trick Difficulty Award” for high-difficulty moves such as frontside 180s. The only female participant, “Ant,” dressed as Minnie, earned considerable votes for both her outfit and snowboarding performance, winning the “Vita Coco Pure Natural Award” and receiving a case of Vita Coco natural coconut water. “Ant” said, “I bought this outfit when I visited Disneyland in Los Angeles once—it felt really cute. It felt great wearing it here.”
After the exciting “Creative Kicker Big Air Contest,” the Shenyang stop of the Red Bull Cold Rush followed tradition by screening the seventh snowboarding documentary, Touch!. Produced by Red Bull, the film mainly documents the lives and snowboarding moments of China’s professional snowboarders, including the stunning moment when He Wei landed China’s first Double Cork 900 (a double rotation with two flips) at the Air & Style. The film received thunderous applause from the audience, whether it was riders performing thrilling spins after descending from heights or smoothly gliding across extremely narrow kickers.
Thirteen-year-old Liu Hanpu came to the event with his parents and participated in the Cold Rush dressed as Detective Conan for cosplay. He had previously taken part in the filming of Touch!, and also placed in the top ten in the domestic qualifiers at last year’s Nanshan Open. Liu Hanpu said, “I’ve watched every episode of Conan, so I chose this character. I didn’t do very well today, but it was quite something seeing myself in Touch!” Liu Hanpu’s father is also an experienced snowboarder who believes that with the popularity of Touch!, and as the Red Bull Cold Rush is held in cities across the country, more people will fall in love with snowboarding, this stylish and trendy extreme sport.
This snow season is heating up. On November 30th, the Red Bull Cold Rush Urumqi stop kicked off as scheduled, followed by viewing parties in 10 other cities including Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Dalian. Fun activities full of creativity and entertainment, such as the “Excavator Snow Slope Building Contest,” will also be launched.
