The Taobao City is under accelerated construction and will focus on helping enterprises tackle the challenge of talent loss during the rapid growth phase of e-commerce, building a paradise that retains and utilizes talent.

Morning Post News (Reporter Wang Yujing, Correspondent Zhuang Hong) As the earliest region in Fujian Province to develop e-commerce, Quanzhou is a national e-commerce hub. Conservative estimates suggest that Quanzhou enterprises achieved retail sales of 2.16 billion yuan on “Double 11” this year, marking an increase of over 50% year-on-year. The immense potential of e-commerce remains to be further tapped. With traditional enterprises becoming more aware of e-commerce, a talent war has ensued. To date, Quanzhou has 500,000 e-commerce practitioners, with an additional 50,000 graduates joining the e-commerce entrepreneurship sector every year. On one hand, the e-commerce industry is booming, dubbed as “e-commerce for all”; on the other hand, enterprises are eager for talent but cannot find suitable candidates. How can this paradox be resolved? “We aim to establish docking and nurturing platforms to retain outstanding talent in Quanzhou City,” said Cai Min, Deputy General Manager of the Taobao City project located in Quanzhou. She stated that they are committed to addressing the e-commerce talent dilemma and creating a “home-like concept” for e-commerce enterprises.

Versatile E-commerce Talent Becoming Increasingly Sought After

Quanzhou has a strong foundation in e-commerce, with well-developed sectors such as footwear, apparel, and tea. These industries have now embraced a path of simultaneous “online and offline” operations—some have even abandoned physical stores to focus solely on online shops. However, “new e-commerce businesses can’t find enough talent, small ones lack resources to train talent, and large ones can’t wait for talent to grow,” said experts from the exchange group of the Minnan E-commerce Enterprise Annual Conference Organizing Committee. Moreover, there’s always something bigger—business models in the e-commerce field continue to innovate, expanding the scope of required e-commerce talent. Two or three years ago, the talent most needed in the e-commerce sector were operators of Alibaba-based online shops. But as the real economy accelerates its entry into e-commerce, what’s lacking today are “talent beyond talent”—professionals who understand B2B, B2C, O2O, mobile internet, possess experience in traditional retail, and are also proficient in online operations.

Cai Min believes that professionals in the e-commerce industry are highly dependent on urban environments, particularly favoring clustered office settings. In such environments, a large number of practitioners gather, enabling mutual discussion and exchange, as well as quicker access to industry trends and information. Unfortunately, Quanzhou currently lacks a dedicated base for e-commerce services and a suitable cluster area for e-commerce enterprises to work and live. Taobao City, leveraging the strong industrial foundation of e-commerce, is specifically designed as an e-commerce office cluster, offering one-stop services.

Quanzhou Welcomes the Offline Entity City of Taobao

On November 5th, Taobao City, located on Nanjiang Bin in Licheng District, held a media meeting, making its first public appearance. As Quanzhou’s first e-commerce headquarters base, Taobao City is a key project at the provincial, municipal, and district levels in Fujian. It is planned to include an e-commerce enterprise headquarters building, e-commerce operation center, and more. It will provide Quanzhou e-commerce enterprises with four core e-commerce services: e-commerce support, warehousing and logistics, technical support, and talent incubation, as well as important supporting services such as finance, business, telecommunications, assets, and E-butler.

Start-up online shops, which are still in their early stages and not yet large in scale, face significant pressure from the high rents of commercial office buildings. Therefore, e-commerce parks with preferential policies are a major attraction for them. Staff from Taobao City explained that the first phase of the project offers innovative duplex commercial spaces ranging from 44 to 800 m², tailored for Tmall and small and micro online shop companies. These have already attracted attention from many e-commerce enterprises and shop owners, with top 100 e-commerce firms signing up to move in. The project’s marketing center will open to the public by the end of this month.

Chen Youming, a seasoned e-commerce practitioner, believes that the birth and planning of any e-commerce park must achieve a harmonious balance between facilities and industrial atmosphere. After hardware facilities, logistics systems, and talent development reach a certain level of maturity, the development of fast information channels and an atmosphere for practitioner interaction becomes essential “DNA elements” urgently needed in e-commerce parks. Without these elements, the park cannot truly fulfill its role in retaining talent.
