After 18 months of renovation, the Taipei Zhongshan Yishe Hotel removed its scaffolding on the 15th, revealing a stylish look distinct from the original old building. A large pop art mural on the exterior wall adds charm and character to the tree-lined Zhongshan North Road.

Among Kris Yao’s renowned green architecture works, the Beitou Branch of the Taipei Public Library is a classic masterpiece. It not only received Taiwan’s Green Building Diamond Certification but was also named one of the 25 most beautiful libraries in the world in 2012. This time, he personally planned the amba Yishe, transforming an old office building into a modern hotel full of design flair. This building, constructed in 1970, was designed by Kao Er-Pan, the renowned architect behind the National Palace Museum Taipei. After 45 years, it combines the different architectural aesthetics of two generations of master architects, offering the best interpretation of the fusion of old and new designs.
To echo the amba brand’s spirit of “environmental protection, technology, and creativity,” Kris Yao renovated the facade of this eight-story building by replacing the original horizontal strip windows with coated low-emissivity (Low-E) glass. Low-E glass is an energy-efficient material with excellent heat insulation properties. It allows guests to enjoy the daylight of the subtropical region while maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature. Its high light transmittance lets travelers overlook the tree-lined Zhongshan North Road and take in the urban landscape of Taipei. The exterior of the hotel is painted dark gray, conveying a bold yet delicate and elegant feel. Under Kris Yao’s meticulous design, the Taipei Zhongshan Yishe Hotel is like wearing an elegant and fashionable black-and-white striped evening gown. Kris Yao said that this creative inspiration came from the beautiful wedding dress displays and happy bridal photos in the shop windows on the sidewalks of Zhongshan North Road, echoing the unique vibe of Zhongshan North Road as the “Wedding Dress Street.”
The hotel entrance cleverly repurposes old aluminum window frames and iron grilles left over from the renovation of the original building. The dismantled aluminum frame materials were cut and reassembled. Since the frames consist of upper, lower, left, and right sections, showing four different types of aluminum cross-sections, the designer used these materials for geometric arrangements. By weaving the solid and hollow surfaces of the cross-sections, an entire artistic motif was created, giving recycled materials new life and imagery. This is also the best representation of the amba brand’s environmentally friendly ethos and heritage of historical culture.
The new amba Taipei Zhongshan Yishe Hotel features a 30x15-meter pop art exterior wall on its south side, fully showcasing amba’s brand spirit of creativity and local Taiwanese characteristics.
The south side of the hotel specially showcases a 30-meter by 15-meterpop art exterior wall,depicting Taiwan’s famous bubble tea, the cultural landmark of Zhongshan North Road—SPOT—Taipei Film House, and amba various creative and playful elements,presented through fun imagery, fully reflecting the ambabrand spirit and local Taiwanese characteristics. The east side of the hotel uses a variety of native Taiwanese plants, including wild grape, honeysuckle, and Mussaenda pubescens, to create a green wall curtain. This “breathing green wall” forms a natural protective barrier, shielding from sunlight and lowering the room temperature. It softly filters sunlight through the leaves, casting dappled light into the guest rooms. This not only creates an atmosphere of an urban forest retreat but also helps the rooms stay naturally cool at night, reducing the need for excessive air conditioning.
