Around 10 a.m. today, Mr. Yu, a Beijing hiker who had been missing for a week after hiking alone in Mentougou, was confirmed dead. His body was found near an icefall in Mentougou.
“It was likely found by volunteer rescuers, near the icefall between the sheepfold in Liugonggou and Zhuajiu Mountain,” a family member at the search command center in Yanchi Town said. The family member noted that the cause of Mr. Yu’s death is still unclear, and police, firefighters, and local government officials have arrived on-site to handle the aftermath.
Mr. Yu, 38, had gone hiking alone in the Mentougou mountain area on January 31 and went missing that night, according to his wife. After the family reported him missing, nearly 100 personnel from volunteer groups including the Zhaitang Fire Brigade, Blue Sky Rescue Team, Qingshan Rescue Team, and Haotian Rescue Team joined the search. On February 2, the Beijing Public Security Bureau’s Police Aviation Corps dispatched two helicopters for aerial search efforts.
It is understood that Mr. Yu’s body has not yet been removed from the mountain. His family has contacted an ultra-low temperature liquid nitrogen preservation unit and a helicopter rescue team to preserve and transfer the remains. (Reported by He Guang, intern reporter Li Ruijia)
