What was supposed to be a joyful working holiday turned into a ghost-haunted ordeal; a terrifying female ghost clung to her so closely—body to body, eye to eye, nose to nose—that the poor journalist didn’t dare move, and had no choice but to “hold her breath” and play dead to fool the ghost!
Media professionals often get opportunities to attend events or travel abroad, which is something most people envy. However, frequent travel isn’t always a good thing, as staying in unfamiliar accommodations can increase the chances of encountering ghosts, turning a holiday trip into a frightening experience.
Take Oliver, a senior editor who has worked for a Western newspaper for many years. Last year, due to bad luck, she encountered a ghost while on a work assignment. “Don’t assume five-star hotels are clean and ghost-free. The hotel where I had my encounter is actually a world-renowned one.”
At the time, she was sent by the newspaper to Langkawi Island to cover the annual international maritime and aerospace exhibition (LIMA). The Western newspaper’s benefits have always been better than those of Chinese-language media. To take care of their staff, Oliver’s employer booked her into the most luxurious five-star hotel on Langkawi. “The room was on the ground floor, very large and luxurious, and it was a suite connected to a garden. You could just slide open the floor-to-ceiling windows and step directly into the garden to enjoy the sea breeze.”
Logically, staying in such a luxurious suite should have made her happy, but as soon as she entered the room, she felt something was off. She kept feeling as if someone was hiding somewhere, watching her. In fact, just outside the floor-to-ceiling windows was a beautifully landscaped garden, but for some reason, the heavy curtains near the window gave her an eerie feeling.
“It was a strange feeling. Outside the window, it was bright and sunny, but just standing next to the curtains made me feel cold all over. So cold that I didn’t even have the courage to pull back the curtains to see if there was anything behind them.”
She thought it was just her being sensitive, so she didn’t bother asking to change rooms.
But when she went to sleep at night, she constantly felt as if someone was staring at her, yet when she opened her eyes, she saw nothing. She just felt intense pressure and her heart raced. Several times, she woke up suddenly from sleep, her heart pounding with anxiety, especially feeling an inexplicable fear toward the curtain area, though she couldn’t explain why.
Although uneasy, Oliver managed to get through until morning. The next day, busy with interviews and note-taking, she forgot about the hotel incident. But when she returned to her room to shower, use the toilet, and rest, things took a turn for the worse. “I was in the toilet, but I could feel someone walking around in the room. I didn’t hear any footsteps, but I could definitely sense someone outside!”
“I was certain I had locked all the doors before using the toilet. Where did this person come from? A chill ran through me, and I didn’t know how to react. I just stared nervously at the door.”
Soon, she felt the person slowly approach the toilet and “stare” at her!
“A wave of pressure pressed against me… Behind the thick door, I could feel a pair of piercing eyes staring at me… At that moment, my whole body went weak. I didn’t even dare to crouch down to check under the toilet door to see if there was another pair of feet waiting outside, ready for me to come out…”
After about five minutes, the pressure suddenly disappeared. Feeling as if she had been granted amnesty, she quickly cleaned herself up, grabbed her key, and without even putting on her shoes, rushed to the reception desk in the hotel’s paper slippers to request a room change. However, her request was denied by the hotel manager, citing the peak tourist season for the maritime and aerospace exhibition, with the hotel fully booked due to the influx of domestic and international visitors.
“I called other hotels, but there were no available rooms anywhere. If I insisted on checking out now, I might end up sleeping on the street.”
Left with no choice, she had to stay. But by the third day, she didn’t even dare use the toilet in her room for a bowel movement, and she took quick showers just to get it over with as fast as possible.
Before going to bed, she made sure to turn on all the lights in the room. But even with these precautions, something still happened. On the third night of her stay, as she slept soundly, she heard faint sounds nearby—like crying, or perhaps labored breathing… She woke up abruptly and instinctively looked toward the curtains.
“There was actually nothing there, but for some reason, I felt there was something wrong with that area. I didn’t even dare to look too long. That night was truly terrifying. My heart was racing, I felt helpless, my mind was in chaos, and I kept shivering and being afraid… Then slowly… I drowsily fell asleep again, but not well, feeling as if someone was watching me sleep…”
Another night passed like this. Finally, it was the last day of her stay at the hotel, with her work almost done. “In the past two days, I was very tense, but being too tense also leads to exhaustion. On the last night, thinking that I would finally leave, I was very happy and slept especially soundly.”
However, again in a half-asleep state, she seemed to hear someone whispering in her ear, chattering away, but no matter what, she couldn’t make out the words. Her body felt as if it were floating in mid-air… a bit hollow… very unreal, like motion sickness. She wanted to get up, but she was too tired to move.
Then, after some time, “Wuuu… Wuuuuu…” suddenly, a shrill cry rang out clearly right in front of her. She finally woke up, and as she opened her eyes wide, she saw a pair of blood-red eyes glaring at her from less than an inch away from her nose!
“The moment I saw those ghostly eyes, I suddenly knew it was the spirit of a woman who had died unjustly. The place where her body lay was right by the curtain. Her anger and resentment were very strong… At that time, she tried to possess me, but couldn’t, so she ended up hovering above me, sticking to me face-to-face, eye-to-eye, nose-to-nose!”
