Professor John D. Kasarda first proposed the conceptual model of the aerotropolis in 2000—a new type of city formed by the clustering of businesses around airports and transportation corridors. He believes that the world’s efficient, fast, and networked development is changing the rules of industry competition and business location selection. Today, airports have become key nodes in global production and commercial activities, as well as engines driving regional economic growth, continuously attracting numerous aviation-related industries to gather around them.
The aerotropolis is the physical manifestation of the “physical internet.” In today’s era of global economic integration, most products are exchanged internationally, and their proportion is growing. Components of a product may be produced in 12 countries and assembled in a 13th. All of this happens through a “physical internet”—a network of distribution hubs and aircraft used to trade, transport goods, and move people.
