Is a rest stop becoming a photography hotspot? The Taian Service Area boasts a dreamy carousel that’s super eye-catching

For those who love Instagram, have you noticed a new photo spot popping up recently—Taian Rest Stop? Some might find it odd: how can a place just for drivers to rest and grab a bite turn into a pilgrimage trend? But if you get a chance to drive here next time, you’ll definitely be amazed by that fantastical, large-scale carousel—and it really is picture-perfect no matter how you shoot it！

The Taian Rest Stop, also known as the Taian Service Area, is located at the midpoint of National Freeway No. 1, at the 159.5 km mark, situated between the Sanyi Interchange and the Houli Interchange. Thanks to its proximity to Houli District in Taichung, the area is rich in tourist resources and regularly hosts street performances and cultural exhibitions. This carousel is one of the large installation artworks at the Taian Service Area.

So why was a carousel chosen to be displayed in the service area? The reason is its location near Houli District, which is most famous for the Houli Horse Ranch. To incorporate regional characteristics, this dreamy carousel was born. Interestingly, under each horse, there’s information about a nearby attraction, and their orientation corresponds to the actual direction of the sites—how thoughtful is that? Moreover, the size of this carousel is comparable to a building, so it definitely stands out and becomes a highlight of the Taian Service Area.

Actually, this large carousel only appeared this summer, but don’t worry—it will remain here permanently. So next time you’re driving by, feel free to stop and check it out. Plus, the service area features various other large installation artworks, and if you love taking photos, you’ll definitely go through plenty of film (or memory cards)!
