From April 28 to June 17, the Tokyo National Museum will host a special exhibition titled “Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga – Treasures of Kyoto’s Tō-ji Temple.” Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga is a national treasure-level picture scroll housed at Tō-ji Temple in Kyoto Prefecture and is regarded as Japan’s oldest manga. The scroll consists of four volumes: Volume A, Volume B, Volume C, and Volume D, with Volume A being particularly famous for its anthropomorphic depictions of rabbits, frogs, and monkeys. To commemorate this special exhibition, Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi will hold a limited-time special event from April 1 to April 14. During the event, over 30 types of original merchandise featuring the rabbit and frog designs from Volume A of Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga will be sold exclusively.
In addition, during this period, Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi will also host three major themed activities: a special display of Japanese-style room items inspired by [Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga], a live demonstration of the tea ceremony, and an experience session on the traditional technique of “collotype.”
The traditional technique “collotype” experience session will take place on Sunday, April 12, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the first-floor main event area. It will showcase the traditional printing technique of “collotype,” which has contributed to the reproduction of national treasure scrolls. With explanations provided by artisans from “Benridō,” the only company in Japan that preserves this technique, participants can enjoy the rich artistry of collotype under their guidance.
