Sets new mountaineering speed record
Swiss Sion, April 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Top Swiss climber Dani-Arnold(Dani Arnold) has set a new milestone that helps kick off the Eiger climbing season: on April 22, the professional speed climber from the Mammut (Mammoth) professional climbing team completed the ascent of the Eiger north face via the Schmid Route in just 1 hour and 46 minutes. With this time, he beat the previous record set by Ueli Steck (Ueli Steck) in 2009 by 10 minutes.
The 1,100-meter-high Eiger north face is one of the three great north faces of the Alps (the other two being the north faces of the Eiger and the Grandes Jorasses). Experienced climbers typically need 8 to 10 hours to climb the rocky and icy Eiger north face. But Dani Arnold did it in just 1 hour and 46 minutes. He conquered the iconic first route up the Eiger north face (the Schmid Route) alone, achieving this feat.

At exactly 8:34 a.m., Dani Arnold set off from the Bergschrund at an altitude of 3,400 meters. The weather conditions were "actually really good, even if not perfect. In many places I’d just climb up smooth, shiny ice, then had to step up onto the rocks. That’s where you’d expect to see snow and ice." said the climber from the Swiss canton of Uri. The Swiss mountain guide is known for his climbing speed. Even when facing extremely tough terrain, Dani Arnold appeared to make it look effortless. When he set the speed record for climbing the Eiger north face in 2011 – a record that still stands unbeaten – hardly anyone outside the climbing community had heard of him.

The 31-year-old mountain guide discovered his passion for climbing at the age of 14. Just a few years later, still a teenager, he was already climbing the Eiger north face with friends.
