Riders of the Red Bull Stairway to Hell Downhill Race have successively conducted real-world testing and adaptive training on the course located at Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie. Although the event organizers scientifically set up several technical adjustment zones, these seasoned world-class downhill mountain bikers were all amazed by this 1,200-meter-high cliffside course consisting of 999 steps, and remained somewhat cautious during their initial test rides.

“This is an unbelievable track, and the race will definitely be an unforgettable experience.”Said Kelly McGarry, a legend in the New Zealand mountain biking scene. Despite having participated in the Red Bull Joyride five times — the event representing the highest level of downhill mountain biking in the world — he still admitted to feeling nervous about racing on such a track. “I need to use deep breaths and tell myself to stay focused, to enjoy the challenge, and other affirmations to reduce my anxiety. The riders competing this time are all excellent, and I hope everyone can perform at their best. Of course, I’m also confident I can be the best, especially on this challenging course.”
ThomasLeMoult is the youngest rider in this event. As someone who signed with the Canyon Factory Team and became a key rider at just 18 years old last year, he too finds this competition full of challenges. He said: “Before coming to China, I saw pictures of the Red Bull downhill race venue, and at the time, I didn’t think it would be very difficult. But today, I realized I had underestimated it. It places extremely high demands on our technique, speed, fluidity, control, and every other aspect. But I’m happy to face such a challenge. Having just gone through a day of travel, my body is a bit tired, so Thomas did not participate in today’s track test and instead stayed on-site discussing race strategies seriously with his friend and rival.”
David, the chief judge of the Red Bull Stairway to Hell Downhill Race from the United States, summarized: “This is a track where riders cannot afford any mistakes. We pursue challenge, thrill, and extremes, but we must also pay attention to rider safety. For the athletes, this track is no longer just a test of technical skill, but a comprehensive assessment of mental strength, on-the-spot performance, technique, speed, and more. Any problem in any area could have dire consequences. Injuries are inevitable in extreme sports. We refine the track through training and testing, and make improvements. The French veteran YannickGranieriwas the first to fall, and the track designers immediately made adjustments.
American rider Mike・Montgomery came to the race with his mom and girlfriend, enjoying the thrill of the sport while being accompanied by family. Mike’s mother said that life is short, so she listens to what he loves to do and encourages him to try things and explore his talents. Just like with this sport, she often worries about him getting hurt, but she keeps encouraging him to be brave and take on the challenge.
Domestic downhill mountain biking is far behind that of Europe and America. Among the spectators were many top domestic mountain biking enthusiasts and riders. One rider commented that it’s incredibly rare to watch top riders from around the world give spectacular performances right at home. The official two-day race on-May 23 and May 24 is highly anticipated.
