On September 13, the Red Bull 2015 Street Dance Challenge, themed "Boogie," kicked off at the Xi'an Ximen Wengcheng. Nearly 40 contestants across five dance styles battled through two rounds, with winners including Freestyle’s Li Wenyu, Breaking’s Yang Kai, Popping’s Xiao Yu, Hip-hop’s Shi Qi, and Locking’s Li Bingbing.
The judging panel for the Xi'an stop was formidable, featuring world-renowned Hip-hop master NIAKO from France, along with three rising stars of the Korean street dance scene: HOZIN, AKA.KIN, and SKIM. The event also featured MCs Luffy Liao Bo and Kill4Nia Yutou from Xi'an. The dynamic performances of the competing dancers and the exciting interactions with the judges ignited waves of cheers both inside and outside the venue.
Among the 242 national contestants who advanced from the preliminary rounds, nearly 40 dancers in Xi'an competed head-to-head, vying to be crowned the strongest street dancer of the first stop. Many arrived early to warm up and familiarize themselves with the venue. From the open auditions to the divisional qualifiers, they maintained peak energy and an unrelenting drive to win.
To widely promote street dance and attract more young people to participate in this art form, this year’s competition has undergone a major format overhaul. In addition to the four mainstream styles—Breaking, Popping, Hip-hop, and Locking—a new Freestyle category has been added to allow competitors to fully showcase their individual potential.
Dou Dou, the youngest contestant at just 12 years old, delivered outstanding performances in both the Freestyle and Locking semifinal battles and successfully advanced to the finals, where he took home second place in Locking. Chen Hengjie, one of Xi'an’s first-generation street dance pioneers, shared that it was his first time dancing in the Wengcheng, describing the atmosphere as intensely "boogie." Gong Xue, nicknamed the "Queen," wowed the crowd with her sharp and clean dance moves, drawing continuous screams. Li Wenyu, who competed in all three individual dance categories, impressed the judges with her exceptional skills, quick stage reactions, and the free-spirited versatility to seamlessly switch between different street dance styles. She ultimately won the Freestyle All-Rounder Champion title and earned the opportunity to represent Xi'an at the Shanghai finals. Commenting on the contestants’ performances, judge NIAKO said that holding a wild street dance battle beneath the Xi'an Wengcheng felt truly unique. He expressed excitement at seeing the passion Chinese youth have for street dance culture and hopes for more opportunities to be involved in the future.
The five champion dancers who emerged victorious in the Xi'an stop of the Red Bull Street Dance Challenge will join the winning teams from the other three divisional stops in Shanghai on November 7 for the national finals, competing for the highest honor among China’s professional street dance athletes.
