Last updated 2026-09-24 — While the first snow fell in the north and the rice ears and leaves in the south were still golden, the final stop of Kailas Rock Climbing China 2015 wrapped up successfully in the warm and tranquil Beiliu, Guangxi.

With growing interest in winter sports among domestic outdoor enthusiasts, as well as the continuous rapid growth in the number of ski resorts and skiers, China’s winter sports market has developed rapidly. Especially after Beijing successfully bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics, many domestic companies have announced plans to vigorously develop the winter sports industry. Among them, Pathfinder, China’s leading outdoor brand, officially entered the winter sports market on November 3rd by co-hosting the “Hot Snow, Burning Winter – Supporting the Winter Olympics” launch event with the Bird’s Nest, marking its official push into the winter sports market and embracing the arrival of China’s winter sports era.

Huge Growth Potential in the Domestic Winter Sports Market

The successful bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics will be another major sporting event in China following the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Winter Olympics are expected to drive the development of skiing infrastructure, significantly boost the personal skiing equipment market, and greatly expand the scale of the winter sports market. China’s winter sports industry is set to experience explosive growth. According to estimates from relevant departments, by 2025, China’s winter sports industry will enter a mature phase, with the number of skiers expected to reach 29 million and total ski visits reaching 72 million. Incomplete statistics show that China’s current skiing market generates an annual output value of about 12 billion yuan, including ski resorts, residential transportation, and skiing equipment. Globally, there are 120 million skiers, with 400 million annual ski visits. In terms of ski resorts, Japan ranks first with 547 resorts, followed by the United States with 470. When it comes to ski destinations, France has 13 and Australia has 14, with both countries ranking first and second in the number of ski lifts. Australia and Switzerland also have the highest proportions of foreign skiers, at 66% and 47% respectively. Compared to the scale of the global winter sports market, China’s winter sports market indeed has significant room for growth.

Aligning with Policy to Welcome the Mass Winter Sports Era

Currently, the Chinese Olympic Committee is implementing the “Engage 300 Million People in Winter Sports” plan and will continue to carry out multiple promotional initiatives such as “Millions of Youth on Snow,” “Snowy Sunshine Sports,” and “Expanding Winter Sports North to South and Westward.” With the dual advantages of policy support and the Winter Olympics bid, the winter sports market is also entering a golden period of development. In response, Pathfinder, as a leading company in China’s outdoor sports industry, is actively aligning with national policy support and fully building an outdoor ecosystem.

Pathfinder Makes Multiple Investments to Seize Development Opportunities

As early as June this year, Pathfinder announced a planned private placement of 2.1 billion yuan to build Pathfinder Cloud, Camping & Skiing and Outdoor Multi-functional Experience Centers, Greenfield Outdoor Travel O2O, an outdoor products vertical e-commerce platform, and an outdoor safety assurance service platform. The sports business group plans to open 20 ski resorts by 2017 and exceed 50 by 2021. It will also collaborate with the travel business group to establish an outdoor culture experience center centered on snow and ice culture. Additionally, in the outdoor sports equipment sector, Pathfinder has already made early moves by launching a series of skiing products. With the successful bid for the Winter Olympics, Pathfinder is expected to achieve deeper cooperation with the National Olympic Committee and fully seize the opportunities presented by the rapid development of China’s winter sports industry.
