For a long time, GPS running watches were considered electronic devices dedicated solely to running. However, as user needs have continued to evolve, GPS watches have expanded their functions to assist users in all aspects of daily life. They have transitioned from being single-function products to becoming more intelligent, with greater capabilities in other areas. Recently, the renowned American brand Garmin launched its new optical heart rate watch, the Forerunner 235, which features a brand-new smart notification function—perfectly embodying this upgrade in role.

If smartphones have changed the way people live, then smartwatches are beginning to change runners' fitness habits. It’s hard to imagine that a GPS watch, originally designed only for running, can now replace some of the functions of a smartphone—acting almost like a phone you can wear on your wrist. It’s more convenient, faster, and more practical. Whether you’re on the subway, walking, or busy with something else, you can check messages anytime, anywhere via the Forerunner 235—such as incoming calls, text messages, and app notifications—simply by raising your arm.

The Forerunner 235 uses Garmin's independently developed optical heart rate technology, allowing real-time display of heart rate changes without the need for a chest strap. To help users develop better fitness habits, the Forerunner 235 also adds new fitness tracking features that record daily activity data such as steps taken, distance covered, and calories burned. As a result, even when you’re not running, it still serves as an exercise and fitness expert, supporting your daily life around the clock.

In terms of running, the Forerunner 235 is more professional than the Forerunner 225. It includes new metrics such as VO2 max, recovery time suggestions, race time estimates, virtual pacer, time/distance alerts (notifications when goals are met), and training effect analysis (assessing the effects of aerobic training). It also adds a “find my phone” function, supports Live Track, and allows customization of the watch via Connect IQ downloadable apps. Overall, the upgraded Forerunner 235 is definitely worth looking forward to.
