Dolan Railway Station in Taitung, hailed as Taiwan’s most picturesque station, attracts many travelers with its breathtaking boundless ocean views. However, to enhance tourism service quality and provide a more comfortable travel experience, improvement works on recreational facilities are scheduled to take place from October 1 to December 31 this year. During this period, the Dolan Railway Station viewing platform and surrounding facilities will be closed for three months — visitors should plan accordingly to avoid disappointment.
Originally a Taiwan Railways stop, Dolan Station ceased passenger services in 2006 due to operational adjustments and was officially decommissioned in October of that year. Located on a hillside, TRA specially designed the station on an elevated platform, offering an unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean. With its iconic red railings and railway tracks, it has been crowned the most beautiful station in Taiwan. Though the station was closed, its beauty remains, drawing countless train enthusiasts and tourists who come to admire its postcard-perfect scenery.

However, to improve the service quality of the tourist attraction, Taitung County Government plans to carry out the “Dolan Railway Station Viewing Platform and Overall Recreational Facilities Improvement Project” from October 1, 2017 (106 in Taiwan’s fiscal year) to December 31. In consideration of visitor safety and to ensure the project is completed on time and to standard, the Dolan Railway Station viewing platform and surrounding facilities will be closed for three months. Nevertheless, local villagers will still have normal access.
Taitung County Government noted that this facility improvement project is subsidized under a key initiative by the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. In the past, the vendor areas around the viewing platform were mostly makeshift structures made of simple metal sheets and wood, resulting in a rather disorderly appearance. In the future, a unified and consistent vending area will be created for business operators.
Additionally, entrance facilities will be improved and a barrier-free, friendly environment will be established. This includes constructing new public restrooms, parking and rest areas, and enhancing other related basic services to create a clean and locally distinctive landscape.
