Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat (Angkor Wat), also known as Angkor Temple, is located inCambodia, and is calledCambodia’snational treasure. It is the largest temple in the world.
The original name of Angkor Wat was Vrah Vishnulok, meaning "temple of Vishnu." AncientBuddhisttexts in China refer to it as "the Buddhist monastery of fragrant sandalwood."
In the 12th century,KingSuryavarman IIof the Khmer Empirewanted to build a grand stone temple complex on flat land to serve as the capital and state temple of the Khmer Empire. As a result, the entire nation was mobilized, and it took about 35 years to complete. It is the best-preserved structure among the Angkor ruins and is world-renowned for its magnificent architecture and intricate bas-reliefs.
In 1992, UNESCO listed the Angkor ruins as a World Heritage Site. Since then, Angkor Wat, as the centerpiece of the Angkor ruins, has become a shining tourism emblem of Cambodia.
For over a hundred years, countries around the world have invested substantial funds in the maintenance of Angkor Wat to protect this world cultural heritage. The image of Angkor Wat has become a national symbol of Cambodia, featured on the country’s flag.
