Historically, due to its location at the junction of Wu and Yue regions, it has long been known as a famous town of Wu and Yue.The ancient town of Fengjing is surrounded by a dense network of waterways, with most homes built along the riverbanks. Boats shuttle across the canals, making shopping very convenient. The town area features crisscrossing water channels and numerous bridges, earning the saying “three steps to two bridges, a glance reveals ten waterways.” By the end of the Qing Dynasty, the town had as many as 52 bridges, and more than ten are still preserved today. The oldest is Zhiehe Bridge near South Street, built in the Yuan Dynasty. Sturdy and time-worn, moss grows in the crevices of its stonework, and stone steps lead down to water docks on both ends. From the bridge, you can see green trees and lush vegetation on both banks, with ancient houses and river docks nearby. In front lies the horizontal Hongqiao Bridge, behind spans another stone bridge, creating scenes of small bridges, flowing water, and quaint homes everywhere.
