Ice climbingcarabiners should have enough space to accommodate quickdraws and ice screws;
2. Locking carabiners are primarily used for connections and are needed for both protection setup and anchor placement;
3. Belay devices without auto-blocking features—such as the GRIGRI—should be used; generally, ATCs or figure-eight descenders are preferred;
4. Gloves must be waterproof, offer good grip, and be as thin as possible while still providing adequate warmth so they don’t hinder tool use;
5. Ropes for ice climbing should be waterproof dynamic (dry) ropes with a diameter of at least 10mm. For rope teams, half or twin ropes are required, which demand more climbing and protection placement experience, as well as strong coordination between climber and belayer.
