Hiking, cycling, and night running are outdoor activities loved by many, especially young people who see them as not only beneficial to physical and mental health but also a trend. However, these activities aren’t as “simple” as they seem. Without proper technique or blind enthusiasm, they can potentially harm your body, and as you get older, health issues may arise. Below are some protective tips for these three activities — take a look.

The cervical spine can also be a vulnerable area.

From a health perspective, cycling primarily involves sitting for long periods with the body slightly leaning forward, which has a greater impact on men. Because cycling can compress the perineal area, it may affect local blood circulation, potentially causing issues such as discomfort or swelling in the groin, testicular discomfort, urgency or frequency of urination. Especially with traditional bicycle seats — which are narrow at the back and protrude at the front — choosing a bike that suits you is crucial for long-distance rides. It’s advisable to wear cycling shorts to reduce friction between the inner thighs and the saddle, protect the skin of your thighs from chafing, and alleviate discomfort during extended cycling. Experts remind that during long rides, periodically lifting your hips can help maintain proper blood flow.

Another potential injury site is the cervical spine — if you keep your neck stretched out for too long, the muscles in your neck can become sore. Experts explain that this is largely related to the choice of bicycle and your riding posture. If you ride hunched over while also needing to look ahead, keeping your neck in one position for an extended period can fatigue the muscles on either side of the cervical spine, and the resulting soreness is actually their way of warning you. Prolonged hunching can also lead to chronic pain and conditions such as lumbar and back fasciitis. Therefore, it’s essential to adjust the saddle height to a suitable level, and when taking breaks, do some stretching exercises to loosen up and relax.

It’s worth mentioning that beginners who experience knee soreness after cycling are often suffering due to incorrect posture. Experts explain that cycling is actually beneficial for the knees. But if your posture is wrong and your knees extend beyond their normal range of motion, it can place unnecessary strain and cause wear and tear. In addition, it’s highly recommended to wear a helmet to protect your head in case of an accident.

In short, any activity requires finding the right “balance.” Moderate exercise is beneficial to your health, otherwise it might lead to hidden health risks down the line.
