Driving is one of the best ways to travel in Tibet. Imagining yourself cruising through Tibet’s stunning landscapes is already pretty cool. But due to its unique geological and topographical conditions, many parts of Tibet feature high mountains, treacherous roads, and unpredictable weather. Moreover, the region has intense ultraviolet rays and thin oxygen levels, all of which make driving in Tibet more challenging. Xiaoye has gathered some advice from seasoned Tibetan drivers—fellow road-trippers, this is essential reading~

6. Try to stick with a convoy. This way, everyone can look out for each other and you’re less likely to get lost. Bear in mind that the Tibetan Plateau is vast—once you’re lost, you might not even see another person, let alone find someone to guide you.

7. Don’t panic if you get stuck in mud.Get out and carefully check the condition of all four tires. Try to free yourself, or get help from another vehicle to pull you out, then proceed with caution. Patience and caution are essential qualities for any driver.

8. Bring an old towel. If you experience vapor lock in the fuel line, you can wet the old towel and use it to cool the fuel pump (not needed for electronic fuel injection vehicles).

9. Check your tire pressure when making stops along the way.Although the pressure difference inside and outside the tires caused by altitude changes is within the tires’ tolerance, the chance of tire issues is still higher than on the plains.

10. It’s best to get your vehicle fully inspected and tuned up once you reach Lhasa. If you can’t find a repair shop right away, try asking for help at shops selling Jeep parts on Jinchu West Road—they often assist travelers driving into Tibet.

No matter where you drive, always remember:Your safety comes first—never take unnecessary risks. We hope all drivers have a fun and safe journey.
