Mountaineer Wang Jing’s new book launch

On the morning of May 30, 2016, the Chinese-language book "Silent Extremes" was launched globally at the Prime Minister's Office of Nepal. The book was authored by mountaineer and explorer Wang Jing and published by Beijing Publishing Group.

Nepali Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Wu Chuntai attended the event. Other guests included: CEO of the Nepal Tourism Board Deepak Joshi, Chairman of Beijing Publishing Group Qiao Bin, President of the Nepal Women Mountaineers Association, and more, with over 200 Chinese and Nepali attendees present.

Xinhua News Agency correspondents in Nepal, Capital FM correspondents in Nepal, Nepal Television, Himalayan Times, the rising Nepal, Gantabya Nepal, Annapurna Post and other major Chinese and Nepali media were present and conducted interviews and coverage.Tao .

The event was hosted by the Nepal Tourism Board, with co-organization by the Everest Future Public Welfare Fund, Nepal Women Mountaineers Association, and Nepal-China Friendship Forum. It received high attention and the highest-level arrangements from the Nepali government, marking the first time in the history of China-Nepal relations that a Chinese book launch ceremony was held at the Prime Minister's Office.

During the event, Prime Minister Oli, as the chief guest, delivered a speech congratulating the publication of "Silent Extremes." He said that Wang Jing is an old friend of Nepal who loves mountaineering, having summited Mount Everest three times from the Nepali southern route, and has forged deep friendships with the Nepali people.

The global launch of "Silent Extremes," hosted by the Nepal Tourism Board, aims not only to promote Wang Jing’s indomitable mountaineering spirit and her philanthropic dedication, but also hopes to help more Chinese people understand and get to know Nepal through this book. He expressed gratitude to Ms. Wang Jing for her contributions to the friendship between China and Nepal.

Wang Jing, author of "Silent Extremes," is a co-founder of Toread, a mountaineer, and a promoter of social welfare causes. She has summited seven 8,000-meter peaks nine times, including three ascents of Everest, and was awarded the title of “China-Nepal Friendship Ambassador” in 2015.

"Silent Extremes" recounts her experience completing the Seven Summits and Two Poles (7+2) mountaineering expedition in just 143 days — the shortest time on record — from January to June 2014. The book highlights her story after the 2014 Everest avalanche: she and Sherpas from Nepal formed their own team, set up their own ropes, and summited Everest at 18:30, setting the latest-ever human summiting time on Everest. This is not only a tale of personal courage, crossing summits, but also a story of a woman blooming against extreme odds, as well as a vivid display of the deep friendship between the peoples of China and Nepal.

As a “China-Nepal Friendship Ambassador,” Wang Jing, who has climbed and explored in Nepal many times, founded the Everest Future Foundation in Kathmandu, Nepal, in August 2015. The foundation aims to improve education conditions for Sherpa children in the Everest region, support local development, and promote environmental conservation efforts. Its mission is to enhance education and environmental protection in the Everest area by mobilizing social resources.

Recently, the Everest Future Foundation built the first “Everest School” in Gumela Village, Solukhumbu region of Nepal, and held a groundbreaking ceremony. The foundation fully funded the school’s reconstruction. In addition, it has also supported the reconstruction of a local hospital, a secondary school, and the high-altitude Kumjung Monastery along the Everest route.

Additionally, on May 29, the day before the book launch, Wang Jing—competing as the first Chinese woman ever—took part in the 2016 Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon, which started from the Everest Base Camp on the Nepali southern side. Despite experiencing over two hours of rain during the race, she completed it in 8 hours and 24 minutes, marking the fastest time among Chinese women.

Appendix: Information about the book "Silent Extremes"

Some paths are meant to be walked alone. —— Wang Jing

"Silent Extremes" tells the story of how Wang Jing completed the Seven Summits and Two Poles (7+2) mountaineering expedition in just 143 days — the fastest time on record. She has summited seven 8,000-meter peaks nine times, including Everest three times.

In 2014, she set out once again, setting herself the goal of completing the Seven Summits and Two Poles project in the shortest possible time. Despite many hardships, she ultimately achieved the fastest record of 143 days to complete all nine summits. A key part of the book is the true account of the 2014 Everest disaster and Wang Jing’s summit of Everest. After the 2014 Nepal Everest avalanche, she and the Sherpas repaired the route themselves, insisted on climbing, and successfully summited, witnessing the sunset on Everest. Her 18:30 summit time remains the latest-ever human ascent. Between 2014 and 2015, no one else successfully summited Everest from the southern side except for Wang Jing’s team.
