Bizarre Railway Sight at Japan’s Unmanned Station: The Mountain Is Gone, Leaving Only an Ultra-Short Tunnel

Trains running along mountain routes usually require tunnels to be dug through both sides of the mountain to allow passage. But at “Kaifu Station” in Tokushima Prefecture, Shikoku, you’ll only see a tiny railway track standing alone not far from the station — with the huge mountain above it nowhere to be found. This unusual sight has made this unmanned station an overnight sensation, becoming a popular photo spot for many train enthusiasts.

This highly unique tunnel is officially named the “Machi-nai Tunnel.” Its distinctive appearance, due to being part of an elevated section, allows it to be seen from below as you drive under the railway. Locals say there used to be a mountain above the tunnel, but it was entirely removed for residential development, leaving behind just this short, mini railway track standing quietly in place. Thanks to media coverage and artist introductions, this station has become an overnight hit. Despite its infrequent train service, it still attracts many train enthusiasts who come specially to take photos. It has now become a must-visit attraction for travelers to Tokushima.
