In the early hours of August 4 Beijing time, at the 129th IOC Session held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the International Olympic Committee announced the inclusion of sport climbing as an official event in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The inclusion of rock climbing in the Olympics is a historic transformation aimed at attracting younger participants and responding to the urbanization of sports. Organized by the Chinese Mountaineering Association and exclusively operated by Shizhi Sports, the "China Climbing Club League" is the country’s highest-level and only "points-based" climbing club league. The brand-new format launched in 2016 — "National Qualifiers + Year-End Finals" — adopts a more open approach, encouraging greater participation from climbing gyms and enthusiasts, thereby infusing this newly added Olympic sport with fresh talent and nurturing a youth pipeline for climbing.
