Since the Volkswagen emissions scandal broke, the VW Group has started cutting costs in WEC. Both Porsche and Audi reduced their LMP1 entries from three to two cars. Audi’s withdrawal helps further reduce expenses. Audi will join the all-electric Formula E series as a factory team in the 2017–18 season. Competing in both WEC and Formula E would be difficult to balance, so focusing solely on Formula E also helps rebuild the brand image, which was significantly damaged by the "emissionsgate." This is also related to Porsche’s strong performance in WEC over the past two years. Not only did they win Le Mans for two consecutive years, but they also secured last year’s drivers' and manufacturers' championships. They are expected to continue dominating this year.
