——Zen, Tea, the Outdoors——
Bitterness:Tea tastes bitter, and so does physical exertion. But after the bitterness comes the sweet aftertaste in tea, and the refreshing release after sports. Witness life’s hardships to understand its sweetness.
Stillness:Only when tasting tea do you realize the calm after the boil. Only through sports can you feel the peace after the heartbeat’s excitement. Only through “stillness” can one truly understand movement, and thereby reach the path of mental clarity, forgetfulness, inner cleansing, and refined taste.
Ordinariness:The essence of the tea ceremony is to perceive the mysteries of the universe and the philosophies of life through trivial, ordinary daily routines. Isn’t getting close to nature and experiencing the outdoors just the same?
Letting Go:Tea drinking also emphasizes “letting go”—letting go of work, of trivial matters, of worries. “Stealing a half-day of leisure,” to enjoy tea, to engage in sports.
What happens when the outdoors meets tea?
When the outdoors meets tea—thus was born the Happy Tea House.
The Happy Tea House originated from the Happy Ski Team. This year marks the twelfth anniversary of the team’s annual event, which is a charitable skiing activity organized by volunteers for professionals in China’s outdoor industry. After each ski trip, the members naturally gather online to chat and banter, and thus the “Happy Tea House” came into being effortlessly. The tea friends here are not only well-versed in the outdoors, skilled in the tea ceremony, and passionate about life, but also generous, enthusiastic, free-spirited, and unbothered by trivialities.
——2017, Happy Tea House, Setting Off Anew——
In 2017, the Asian Outdoor Exhibition’s “Happy Tea House” will take “Zen and Tea as One” as its theme, highlighting the culture of meditation. In addition to the usual tea tasting, exchange, and promotion of craftsmanship, a series of new programs will be launched.
This year, the design and construction of the Happy Tea House was overseen by Tao Dawei, completed by Tao Suo Studio. The main structure is made of bamboo, and the site simulates the scene of “a home deep in the bamboo forest, where roosters crow amidst the southern bamboo sea.” Bamboo is hollow at its core yet upright in spirit. There is also a small Tai Chi garden feature, representing how all things in the universe and nature exist in a dynamic balance of yin and yang—renewing and thriving endlessly...

Brew some tea, open a book, keep the noise outside your heart, and everything becomes pure and light. Time flows slowly and serenely in tea, and all this tranquility feels solid, this passing of time, completely willing.
“Ten years to learn the wine drinker’s way, a lifetime to become a tea person.”
