On July 14, 2017, guests from the Italian Embassy in China, the National Stadium, art and educational institutions, along with many fashion enthusiasts, attended the opening of the Michelangelo International Art Exhibition at the Bird’s Nest. The exhibition features museum-grade replicas of Michelangelo’s classic works, including *David*, *Pietà*, and *The Creation of Adam*, comprehensively showcasing the Renaissance master’s outstanding artistic achievements in drawing, sculpture, architecture, literature, and fresco.

Driven by the opportunities presented by the Belt and Road Initiative for cultural exchange and cooperation, the China National Stadium (Bird’s Nest), with the support of the Italian Casa Buonarroti Museum, commissioned internationally renowned fresco master Antonio de Vito (authorized by the Italian government) to curate the exhibition. It also includes *Twelve Prophets* meticulously copied by Ding Fang, Dean of the Renaissance Research Institute at Renmin University of China, using a brush on antique rice paper. The entire exhibition pays homage to and continues the legacy of these classics, while also reflecting the growth, creative philosophy, and contemporary educational significance of the master artist.

Fresco master Antonio de Vito, who has been in Beijing for several days, has been busy at the exhibition setup site, personally overseeing the planning themes, exhibit arrangements, and artistic tone to ensure a top-tier presentation.

Among the over 100 exhibited masterpieces, journalists observed a bust of Michelangelo created by his close friend Ricciarelli, a depiction of the Greek philosopher Heraclitus symbolizing Michelangelo by his rival Raphael, Michelangelo’s own self-portrait of flayed skin in *The Last Judgment*, as well as sculptures such as *Pietà*, *Rondanini Pietà*, and *Bacchus*. Particularly eye-catching is the 1:1 scale mold replica of *David*, one of only three in the world, supervised by Italian cultural heritage authority Andrea Chiesi, which is especially awe-inspiring within the specially constructed domed exhibition hall at the Bird’s Nest Cultural Center. With the help of Crystal VR panoramic technology, visitors can also immerse themselves in the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City to view the frescoes *The Creation of Adam* and *The Last Judgment*, traveling through time to experience the art scene of the Middle Ages 500 years ago.

The exhibition site simulates Michelangelo’s studio and the fresco creation workshop. Antonio de Vito plans to demonstrate the complete process of creating a fresco using medieval techniques over ten days. Visitors can not only observe up close but also try their hand at fresco-making and even have the chance to dine with curator Antonio de Vito. During the exhibition, the National Stadium also invited Dean Ding Fang to host a series of lectures on “Eastern Renaissance” at the Bird’s Nest Cultural Center, which the public can attend by reservation or watch via live stream. Zhang Zikang, Director of the CAFA Art Museum, was also invited to discuss the future development of public aesthetics and art education.

The Bird’s Nest hopes to play a role in public aesthetic enlightenment and promoting public aesthetic education by introducing international-standard art exhibitions. During the exhibition period, the Bird’s Nest Cultural Center, together with Beijing Guang’ai School, curator Antonio, and actress Du Ruoxi, launched a children’s charity project, personally gifting Michelangelo books to children. In an interview, Antonio de Vito said, “Every child is born an artist; our responsibility is to guide them to discover beauty in life.” Meanwhile, the Bird’s Nest also announced that this Michelangelo International Art Exhibition will be free for children with disabilities: “We hope to plant a seed of art in the hearts of children, which may grow into a forest of artistic beauty in ten or twenty years.” Spanning the summer and National Day holidays of 2017, the Michelangelo exhibition has the potential to become a hot topic among professional audiences and art lovers, yielding fruitful results in public aesthetic enlightenment and cultivation.

The Bird’s Nest has long been regarded as a dual landmark of modern Chinese architecture and the Olympic spirit, hosting spectacular cultural performances and witnessing athletic feats that push the limits. Today, the Bird’s Nest is undergoing subtle changes. Leveraging the cluster advantages of its comprehensive cultural and sports facilities and its international brand influence, it serves Beijing’s strategic positioning as a cultural and international exchange hub, promoting public art aesthetics education and cross-disciplinary professional dialogue, gradually forming a cultural and art exhibition system composed of permanent exhibitions and special series.

During the Michelangelo International Art Exhibition, the Bird’s Nest Cultural Center also launched multiple parallel exhibitions related to the Renaissance, offering limited-edition art reproductions and art book sales, making art part of daily life and infusing artistry into everyday items to meet the public’s spiritual needs for artistic beauty. At the same time, the Bird’s Nest and Michelangelo, two iconic brands, engage in cross-industry collaboration through “cross-boundary synergy” for widespread entertainment-based dissemination. Starting with Michelangelo, the Bird’s Nest also plans to introduce a series of internationally-standard art exhibitions, supplemented by art derivatives, art brokerage, model exports, and other sectors.

Step into the Bird’s Nest

The National Stadium (Bird’s Nest) is located in the southern part of the Beijing Olympic Park Central Zone, on the east side of the northern end of Beijing’s central axis. It officially opened in 2008. The stadium’s form resembles a life-giving “nest” and cradle, embodying humanity’s hopes for the future. The Bird’s Nest has hosted numerous top-tier international events, including the 2008 Olympics and the 2015 IAAF World Championships, and is also the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Winter Olympics. It is a dual symbol of contemporary Chinese architecture and Olympic heritage.

In the exploration of sustainable post-Olympic venue use, on March 21, 2015, the National Stadium renovated 15,000 m2of space on the north side of the building and established the “Bird’s Nest Cultural Center” for operation. The Bird’s Nest Cultural Center is positioned as a “public cultural space for the capital” and a “cultural, sports, and financial service platform.” Its core functions include art brokerage, original art exhibition planning, cultural and creative product development, art education, public activities, and international exchanges, with academic research and educational exchanges conducted both domestically and internationally centered around the art center.

Based at the Bird’s Nest, the Bird’s Nest Cultural Center engages in cross-domain international dialogue and dissemination, aiming to reflect China’s contemporary iconic architecture, sports culture spirit, and East-West cultural exchange. It gathers domestic and international art works, displays, and institutional resources, combining academic research with capital-driven initiatives to comprehensively develop art education and exchange functions, leveraging its artistic incubation capabilities. Beyond its role as a hall of Olympic spirit, it has also become an artistic sanctuary where the public can enjoy public cultural services.
