In 1982, 50 trail running marathon athletes, united by their shared passion and dreams, jointly founded the premium trail running brand Montrail.
They ran hundreds of miles every week on rugged mountain trails, continuously field-testing Montrail shoes. In 2017, it officially became part of the outdoor brand Columbia, forming the new high-end Columbia Montrail trail running series.

It sponsors many of the country’s most renowned trail running events, including the 2023 Huangshan 168 Ultra Trail Race in March, the “Gobi March 12” Business School Gobi Challenge in April, China’s first 330-kilometer trail race in May, the Columbia 168 Ultra Trail Race in July, and the Three Gorges 168 Ultra Trail Race in November. Internationally, since 2015, Columbia has sponsored the world’s top trail running event — the UTMB — Tour du Mont Blanc Endurance Race. Established in 2003, this international event has now become the most prestigious race in the eyes of trail runners worldwide, attracting participants from over 87 countries and 7,500 elite trail runners each year. It is hailed as “the one trail race every runner must do in their lifetime.”
In August 2016, the Columbia China Team conquered the UTMB while wearing Columbia Montrail trail running shoes, creating a legend in the history of Chinese trail running and perfectly embodying the Columbia Tested Tough brand spirit.
