Self-deprecatingly referring to herself as an “ice novice,” Zhang Jingchu faced her first ice climbing experience in sub-zero24degree temperatures. Not only did she have to climb upwards, but she also had to remove the ice screws left by her coach along the way. The route featuredsteep slopes and extremely hard ice layers. She slipped several times while hanging on the icefall, and her ice axe was so frozen she could barely lift it. The extreme cold and high-intensity physical exhaustion caused Zhang Jingchu’s perceived temperature to fluctuate constantly.
