Introduction to the Hangzhou West Lake Silk Culture Museum: As one of the three treasures of the Silk Road and one of Hangzhou’s three golden calling cards, silk encapsulates the city’s profound history and cultural heritage. As the first Chinese commodity to reach the world, silk serves as an emotional bond connecting China with the globe. It is fitting to use silk to carry the culture of Chinese cities.

Taking Hangzhou’s “urban memories” to the nation and the world, and polishing Hangzhou’s golden calling card, has long been the unwavering aspiration of the Hangzhou West Lake Silk Culture Museum.

Established in 2015 with approval from the Hangzhou Municipal Bureau of Gardens and Cultural Relics and the Civil Affairs Bureau, and initiated by Hangzhou Sizhan Silk Co., Ltd., the Hangzhou West Lake Silk Culture Museum is a private non-profit thematic museum. Its mission is to collect, display, preserve, research, and exchange silk cultural heritage. Upholding the philosophy of popularizing silk culture knowledge and serving the public, the museum actively promotes the inheritance of traditional Chinese culture.

The Hangzhou West Lake Silk Culture Museum has an exhibition area of 1,200 square meters, featuring a lobby, basic exhibition hall, master studio, children’s experience hall, and temporary exhibition hall.

The museum is open to the public free of charge all year round, 365 days a year. Since its opening on May 30, 2016, it has received hundreds of thousands of visitors. For those with purchasing needs, after visiting the museum, they can directly enter the Sizhan Silk exhibition area to view and buy modern silk products, showcasing the development achievements of contemporary Hangzhou silk culture to visitors.

In addition to traditional silk, the museum also vigorously promotes the cultural and creative industry and supports the development of contemporary silk culture. It provides exhibition spaces for many silk culture brands within the museum, showcasing the development achievements of contemporary Hangzhou silk culture to visitors. The silk here isn't just for viewing—it can be “taken home.” The museum features a silk sales exhibition hall where visitors can purchase exquisite silk products during their visit.

Protecting, disseminating, and promoting silk culture—from historical relics to craftsmanship processes, from technological preservation to modern fashion—the Hangzhou West Lake Silk Culture Museum encompasses all things related to silk, both ancient and modern, domestic and international. When you visit Hangzhou, let’s step into this museum that tells the story of Chinese silk culture!
